For instance, the Q5's navigation doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera to see around corners.

It's still a great option, especially if you want to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can work while you're at work, or school. The only thing it's missing that you won't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on for long and don't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. If you want to, you can swap the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that can sweep floors. Its smart cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean and effective in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming it, something we've not seen on other robotic cleaner and mop vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With a sleek circular design that appears like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxy units this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most appealing looking in our tests. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It features advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to use. It comes with an intuitive mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you try to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and some extra cost it's a powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot mop and vacuum. It has a number of features that are advanced and will help you forget your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and cleans and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection, though this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner comes with a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to accomplish the task. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the amount of dirt they are.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot cleaner with mop to clean a particular area of your home using the app or via voice commands. The well-designed iRobot application guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, set up a spot clean or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms for better performance. The app also provides access to a variety of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, meaning it can get to corners and underneath furniture better. It also has a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction and combs with intelligent technology for hair of pets. You can also create a spot-cleaner which will thoroughly clean a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras look like cute eyes. It does a good job vacuuming, but is more prone to get caught on low thresholds and is more noisy than the other top robot vacuums we've tried. It also comes with an app that's not as intuitive and has a tiny base station that can't double as a bin for emptying.
