In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, repairing and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, repaired shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi a5 key fob, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning.
