How to Replace an audi tt Key Fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It is a little tricky to test because there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.
I don't know what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.
Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement key audi. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at the Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an excellent choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi key blade because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a typical part that is found across the audi replacement key cost 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
