How to Replace an audi spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.
