How to Replace an audi spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector audi replacement key service hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially in the case of an Bosch sensor audi Key Fobs like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the audi a3 key's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car key replacement audi components to be affected.

1200px-Vauxhall_logo_2019.svg_.pngThe G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common feature across the Audi Key replacement cost uk 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
