How to Replace an audi new key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Look key for audi signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your Audi keyless Go since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see an average resistance of 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common feature across the audi keys replacement 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.
