In August 2023, Misfits Boxing announced that the bridgerweight weight class would be included in their official weight divisions with a 205 Ibs limit. The World Boxing Association announced a new 224-pound super cruiserweight division to be introduced in December 2023. By the time the division was introduced it was given the "bridgerweight" name. Evgeny Tishchenko defeated Leon Harth on 9 December 2023 to become the inaugural WBA World Bridgerweight champion but was subsequently stripped after testing positive for a banned substance. Julio César La Cruz was awarded the WBA gold championship on 16 December 2023.

Rehydration clauses are important in boxing as they limit how much weight a boxer can gain back after weighing in. This helps maintain fairness by preventing fighters from gaining an excessive advantage due to significant weight gain before a match.

An amateur boxer must make the weight at the initial weigh-in; there is no opportunity to try again later. Boxers who fail to make their projected weights are eliminated from their bouts. There is a "general weigh-in" before the start of the tournament and a "daily weigh-in" on the morning of each of a fighter's bouts. At the general weigh-in, the fighter must be between the weight class's upper and lower limits; at the daily weigh-in only the upper limit is enforced. A fighter outside the limit at the initial weigh-in may be allowed to fight in a different class if there is space in the tournament. At major events such as boxing at the Olympics, there is a limit of one boxer per country per weight class.

It is difficult to identify a dominant boxer in this weight class because there are a number of elite competitors competing at the same time. Emanuel Navarrete, who currently holds the WBO belt and is ranked as the top boxer by a prominent American boxing newspaper called "The Ring," is arguably the most formidable opponent. Despite this, Gary Russell Jr. (WBC) and Leo Santa Cruz (WBA) do not even make it into the top 10 of The Ring’s rankings, which ultimately demonstrates how difficult this weight class is. Kiko Martinez has been around the block, and the veteran has suffered a few defeats along the way, yet he still manages to hold the IBF belt.

Super middleweight sandwiches two weight classes in boxing. Boxers in this division typically weigh between 160 pounds (73 kg) and 168 pounds (76 kg). This weight class made its debut in 1967. Over the years, this has been one of the most attractive division in boxing, with many of the greatest names achieving glory in this category.

Lebedev knocked Jones out with 2 seconds left in their 10-round bout. After round 9, the scorecards read (87–84, 85–86, 90–81). The controversy arose when Lebedev punched Jones, when it was, to some, clear that Jones was not responsive and was out on his feet. The final punch put Jones out cold on the canvas and he did not regain his senses for more than 5 minutes amid active medical help. After the bout, Lebedev said that he had nothing to be sorry about. Referee Steve Smoger was also accused of incompetence because he did not stop the fight even though Jones could no longer defend himself which led to Jones taking unnecessary damage. In a statement following the fight, Smoger said, "I didn't stop the fight because there were only a matter of seconds remaining in the fight and it seemed that Roy was pretending, trying to trick his opponent. He did this repeatedly in the fight. So I thought Jones was doing the same thing here, trying to deceive Lebedev in the final seconds of the fight in order to lure Denis in to land a big punch ." Jones, when asked about his feelings on the punch responded, "I forgive him".
