Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and PvE Damage.

Components

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot for them; the item must have been at the very least upgraded to blue level for a component to be used. A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it is applied to (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, allowing players make stronger versions of the equipment that require fewer Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the defense or attack properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed mechanic. Each upgrade increases the chance that a higher tier version of the item will be available at the next reset. This gives players a reason to upgrade their gear even if they are unsure what will be improved following an update.

The boost upgrade may be successful or not, the process may be costly, and there is a high possibility that the item will be obsolete or even break when it fails. A failure to upgrade can destroy the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item.
